When your bicycle is your main mode of transport..
Well, it was a 10 year old well used bike that needed upgrades to function well anyways. Not a huge loss.

Word of advice: always put your lock around the frame. Wheels are too easy to remove.

You just learned there is a wrong way to lock up your bike.

You’d think someone would have noticed that they were stealing it.

Noticed? Yes.
Would they have done anything? No.
People suck.

Lock wasn’t long enough to reach around the frame when locked to such a bike stand, and a long and sturdy lock was more expensive than what the bike was worth. I have friends that has gotten their brand new bikes stolen because the lock was long but not thick enough.
I’ve also locked it that way for four years, and this area is usually closed during the night..

He should have, but note that those are terrible bike racks, with no good place to attach to the frame. Probably couldn’t get it properly secured without two locks (though using both a ‘U’ lock and chain is much safer anyway, since you need two different tools to defeat them).

I am reliably informed that, in Finland or in Japan, if you rest your bike up against a wall and go into a store, it will be there when you come out.
Back in the 90s I lived in Dupont Circle, DC - law school and all that. My mountain bike was stolen from my tiny 7th floor balcony. The only way up there was a church roof next door, meaning they had to scale 4 stories up the balconies on the side of the building. 400 bucks to replace it.

Yep, quite release wheels come of quick (hence the name), having it locked like that is only slightly better than not having it locked at all. The people who stole it are still assholes though. Did you have it registered with the local police or note the serial number? That increases (very very slightly) the chance that you could get it back.

Well, I followed #1 (some bikes there aren’t even locked to the stand) and #5 (see OP), and the lock I used isn’t your regular cable lock..
If the bike was worth more I wouldn’t have kept it there at all though, standing outside exposed to the elements and possible thiefs...

Earlier this week I saw someone looking through our trash containers in the same back yard. I suspect he saw all the bikes there and decided to come back with some friends and get whatever they could carry...

There is a lot of windows facing out that way, but if it was in the middle of the night...

That is probably the case in 80 % of Norway as well, but not Oslo..

It was registered with a “preventive sticker” on it and everything, but I haven’t found the serial number yet. I have contacted the company that has the register to see if they can find it in their archives, and has said that the bike is stolen. It’s not that important for me to get the bike back, but I don’t mind the police finding the assholes that stole it.

Put the rear wheel in instead of the front. Lock through the rear wheel and rear triangle of the frame.

Put the leftover wheel on your local Craigslist-equivalent? The guy just might be dumb enough to buy the wheel off you. At the very worst, you recoup some money.

Nah, the guy probably took the front wheel off the bike next to it, put the two together and rode away.

If you can’t get the lock to the frame, and your fork has suspension, getting it through the fork works. Sorry your bike got yanked, I’ve never had a bicycle stolen but came back to a missing motorcycle once. That sucked.
